      Topic : Bartering

The exchange of services and goods began before money was even thought of. Today, bartering is still very active. It is a wonderful way to help you keep your costs down in slow seasons. For businesses just starting out, bartering is a great way to gain new business and build on your client referral base.

I was surprised to see the statistic from the International Reciprocal Trade Association reporting that over eight billion (yes billion) dollars worth of trade transactions occur yearly in the U.S. alone!

For tax purposes bartering is considered the same as a cash transaction and should be recorded accordingly in your accounting records.

You may be familiar with bartering on a one to one basis. Such as baking some pot pies and trading these with the goat farmer down the road because your child is allergic to cows milk (my mother did this)..or building a website in exchange for business cards, brochures and other printed literature. Everyone has a skill to trade.

The second form of bartering is through a barter exchange service or broker. These work very well if you don't find the person with the services you need or those that need your services or product. I found some great resources online to find others to barter with.
